Wine and Cheese: 5-wine tasting ‘A Journey through Saale/Unstrut – All in White’
In August of 26, we welcomed six very charming young ladies. With the exception of two, they had all travelled from all over Germany to organise an unforgettable hen party for one of the six. We were delighted to set the scene with a tasting of five white wines.
After arriving, they headed more or less straight to our place, the Friedrich. A five-wine tasting on an empty stomach is, of course, a challenge. As it’s suitable for vegetarians, we served a matching cheese with each wine – and just like that, the five-wine white wine tasting with cheese was ‘invented’ as a new offering for wine enthusiasts.
There was fresh goat’s cheese to accompany the 2025 Sauvignon Blanc Spätlese dry from Johannes Beyer, Dorndorf. It was a good pairing; the wine’s acidity cut through the creamy, slightly rich texture of the goat’s cheese perfectly. The flavours complemented one another beautifully.
Next came the 2025 dry Müller-Thurgau from the Klaus Böhme Winery in Kirchscheidungen. We served it with a very young Gouda; the wine remained discreetly in the background. The delicate, slightly buttery flavour of the young cheese complemented the wine very well.
For the third tasting, we deliberately chose the 2025 dry Pinot Blanc from Bernard Pawis in Zscheiplitz, as the guests were also in the mood for something warm to eat. We served Schlutzkrapfen with various fillings to accompany it, and for the starter, the third cheese in the selection was a French Brie with a lovely soft consistency.
Next up was the 2025 dry Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) ‘Muschelkalk’ Auslese from Grober Feetz in Freyburg, accompanied by a matured Appenzeller cheese. After all, the Grauburgunder needed a robust pairing.
To round off the tasting, the 2023 ‘Alte Reben’ Spätlese dry Riesling from the Wartenberg vineyard was served. The cheese pairing for this wine was a fine Gorgonzola. The piquant sharpness of the blue-veined cheese was the perfect match for this Riesling. Together, they created a taste experience on the palate akin to a dessert in its own right, albeit an unusual one.
We started at half past six, taking our time, and the ladies set off at 10 pm; they had to catch trains from Naumburg Central Station.
The tasting followed our sample theme, “A Journey Through the Saale/Unstrut Region – All in White.” We are more than happy to accommodate special requests and interests. However, we also have additional suggestions for how the wine tasting can be structured around the main focus: the wines themselves.
