2022 Cabernet Cortis Barrique Winery Wartenberg
The year 2022 in the Saale-Unstrut region was characterised by an exceptionally high number of hours of sunshine and severe drought. As a result, the already powerful PIWI grape variety Cabernet Cortis (a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Solaris) accumulated an exceptionally high sugar content in its berries on the steep slopes of the ‘Naumburger Steinmeister’. It boasts a record-breaking 14.5% alcohol content.
For German red wines – particularly those from the Saale-Unstrut region, which lies so far north – this is an absolutely outstanding figure, lending the wine tremendous power and excellent ageing potential. The wine is very full-bodied due to its alcohol content; it feels almost ‘creamy’ or heavy on the palate and has a long, warming finish with powerful yet, thanks to its maturity, supple tannins.
