Silvaner
The Silvaner grape variety is one of the oldest grape varieties in Europe. It probably originates from Austria. It has been native to Germany since the 17th century. It is a natural cross between Traminer and Austrian white.
Due to its age, there is an impressive number of synonyms, officially no less than 147. The best known of which are certainly Sylvaner and Grüner Silvaner. Perhaps the name Silvaner comes from the Latin word for forest, Silva. Silvanus was considered the god of the forest and the power of nature. He was particularly revered in the countryside for this reason and for the invention of plant cultivation.
